Importance of checking your credit report

March 6, 2017

Worried about identity theft? Check your credit report.

Checking your credit report can help you spot signs of possible identity theft

Your credit report generally contains information about you, where you live, how you pay your bills, and public record information, such as bankruptcies, foreclosures, or tax liens. But if someone has used your personal information fraudulently to open accounts, those accounts also may appear on your credit report.

You are entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) once a year using www.AnnualCreditReport.com. Beware of other look-a-like sites that may charge you for their services.

If you find errors on any of your credit reports, notify the appropriate credit reporting agency and contact the fraud department of any business that reported an error.

If you believe you are the victim of identity theft, contact the Ohio Attorney General’s Identity Theft Unit for assistance.
