New fake letter scam hitting some Ohio property owners

August 12, 2019

Some Ohio homeowners have been targeted with fraudulent letters that appear to be official correspondence from the State of Ohio and even use the state seal. The letters claim there are mistakes on a deed and request that the consumers sign and send a new “quick-claim deed.” According to Franklin County Auditor’s Office, the letters “could result in multiple consumers claiming ownership of the same property.”

Ohioans with questions about the legitimacy of a letter that appears to be communication by a government office should call the government organization directly using a phone number they know to be legitimate (not the number off of the letter). Consumers can find an organization’s real phone number and address through a phone book, official website or recent billing statement.
